Leading With Vision: How To Negotiate With the Future

posted by Paul

This installment from F E T C 2011, called Leading With Vision: How to Negotiate With the Future, is presented by Rem Jackson. The program guide says of this presentation:
Change is coming and it is rapidly accelerating. Educational leaders and teachers that are striving to be effective can easily get derailed by the day-to-day grind, by those people that "don't get it," by unrealistic expectations and by a lack of support. How can educators plan for technology infused schools when many of them don't know what tomorrow will bring? In this session participants will explore some of the best "technology enhanced" ideas and strategies for any leader that wants to break through and truly become the leader.

In times of change, the learners will inherit the world, while the knowers remain well-prepared for a world that no longer exists.

..this session is about YOU...

everything's looping, the same as before, yet rapidly changing – hard to grasp, though

Lead With Vision, negotiate with the future – hidden in plain sight: I already know this. Pay closer attention.

Have a talk with yourself:
Rules – ok to talk; OK to answer.

Ask: where do you want to go? You can't wait. Nobody can stop you. Barriers, yes. But, only you can prevent yourself from getting there, wherever it is.

Your sphere of influence? – classroom? Your Principal can't stop you. Don't listen to everybody else.
  • Classroom?
  • School?
  • District?
  • State?
  • National?
  • Galactic?
Most People
  • unfulfilled & dissatisfied with their lives
  • we set and attain goals that don't fulfill us

People are directed either:
  • inside out
  • outside in

Our actions:
  • mostly based on our true priorities
  • often FEAR based – False Events Appearing Real

We're all the same:
  • 24 hours
  • breathe air

It's the ________
  • excuses for why I'm not responsible for what happens

1. Write down what you want:
  • A goal not reduced to writing and reviewed often is a mere wish
  • lifetime
  • 5yrs
  • 3yrs
  • professionally, personally, health, fun (add: spiritual)

2. Take Good Care of Yourself – stress, rest; recovery, growth (manage your energy)
  • physical
  • mental
  • emotional
  • spiritual
The Power of Full Engagement – Jim Loehr and Tony Schwartz (book)
  • manage energy, not time

  1. Aim for Balance
Get serious:
  • crystallize your thinking
  • plan a deadline for attainment
  • have a burning desire
  • have confidence to go for it and see it through (others will not want you to reach your goal)
  • have an iron will – pay the price, no matter what
  • is it worth it to me? The cost?

  1. Get some (new) friends
Power of Association:
  • You are the average of the five people you hang out with most (“the master mind”)

The Mastermind Alliance:
  • Your KEY Mastermind Alliance (2-4 people, hold each other accountable)
  • Special Mastermind Groups (get connected, involved, with groups of people)
  • A Mastermind Alliance with your coworkers (don't tell them; find a few who have a spark)
  • A Mastermind Alliance with your spouse
  • A Mastermind Alliance with education (bombard your brain with good things)
  • A Mastermind Alliance with yourself

Napoleon Hill – Keys to Success: the 17 Principles to ?? (book)

Structure Affects Behavior:
of People over time

Thinking about structures:
  • K-5
  • 6-8
  • 9-12

How are these designs relevant to the world we live in today?

Mental Models:
  • If a factory is torn down but the rationality which produced it is left standing, then that rationality will simply produce another factory. - Robert Pirsig

Will the present reform efforts just lead us to another version to the factory?

Examine Mental Models:
  • assumptions about how we do things
  • where do mental models come from?

4th Wave of Technology:
  • web 2.0, etc. - examine... still as factories, or seed beds, with students as seeds
  • classroom is seed bed; we provide for the seeds

Rod Haenke:
  • educator in MN -
  • 99% live in poverty
  • 3-4 grade levels behind
  • challenge: professional development model
  • help teachers utilize best practices aligned with curriculum
  • grade level teacher get together weekly to help kids succeed

The breakthrough:
  • analyze student performance, work, demonstration of skills – no figure what teachers need to do differently to help kids succeed

When you leave here: take action

Motivation isn't a set of power phrases:
  • Is... the ability to see in the present a projection of yourself that you want
  • put a plan into action
  • be aware of the price
  • move steadily toward goals daily
