This installment from FETC 2011, called Getting Teachers to Adopt Technology: What To Do and Not To Do, is presented by Rushton Hurley. The program guide says of this presentation:
Some are ready, some want no part, and the rest need inspiration and direction, in that order. This session includes a dozen suggestions on what to and not to do regarding the best use resources and funds, building collaboration and promotion of schools and programs, and pulling the inner technophile out of even the most technophobic. The presenter will include information on training, implementation, and equipment.

Technology should do one of two things:
  1. Help my kids learn better
  2. Save me time
Six Pairs of Don't and Dos (in 2 areas):

  • Training
  • Funding

Training
  1. Don't limit by requiring oneself to be a technology expert
  2. Do remind teachers of their expertise
  1. Don't start with standards
  2. Do show something fun –

  1. Don't sit everyone in a lab for training
  2. Do allow regular (and short) sharing time

Funding
  1. Don't limit technology to labs
  2. Do show what's possible with one or two computers in the classroom
  1. Don't buy expensive software a teacher has never tried/used
  2. Do learn what's freely available
  1. Don't blanket the campus with expensive hardware
  2. Do use target spending to focus purchases
